Head of PE at ALP Nuneaton (SEN)
"Working with Dancing Dave (David Mckenna) has been a truly transformative experience for our learners at ALP Nuneaton. The creative, immersive and sensory-rich dance and drama sessions delivered by him have had an extraordinary impact on both engagement and wellbeing across the board. From the moment the sessions begin our students are captivated. They participate with genuine enthusiasm, often with smiles stretched across their faces, fully immersed in the world being created around them. What’s most impressive is the way this approach breaks down barriers. Students who typically struggle with focus, confidence or communication thrive in these sessions. The multi-sensory environment allows them to connect physically, emotionally and imaginatively, which in turn nurtures self-expression and builds trust. The benefits go far beyond the sessions themselves. We’ve seen improvements in social interaction, emotional regulation, physical coordination and self-esteem. Many of our learners carry this positivity into their everyday school life showing greater willingness to collaborate, express themselves and try new things. Dave brings a rare blend of artistry, therapeutic sensitivity and educational skill. His approach supports our students holistically, creating a safe space where every individual is seen, heard and celebrated. It’s clear that this isn’t just about dance and drama, t’s about unlocking potential, fostering joy and making a meaningful difference. We feel incredibly lucky to be working with such a dedicated and inspiring member of the creative and physical team."
"It was important that I brought the right artist on board for this brand new rural community performance venture, under the umbrella of Project OK. A project which advocates for social cohesion & changed narratives, thus improving mental health & wellness. Commissioning David was an easy decision, having worked alongside his unique theatrical craft and generous collaborative offering, for many years. His inherent inclusive & people centred approach, seeing everyone in the space, and every voice heard, was exactly what this project needed, and aligned completely with my values. From day one, the group were safely challenged and encouraged to make bold creative decisions, creating life changing moments for each of them, and a beautiful long lasting connection amongst the group. Not forgetting David’s unique film inspired theatrical language, drawing out the beauty of humanity with individual stories and characters running through. Perfect creative style to engage and inspire the group. This skill created the stunning visual tapestry that is’ Let’s Connect,’ co created with the group & Directed by David, tackling self worth, anxiety, relationships & work, to a banging sound track. This work absolutely sits under the framework of Project OK, as it physically advocates for support, care and connection.’
